Clear Debris From Your Outdoor Unit

Over the fall and winter, leaves, twigs, and dirt accumulate around your outdoor condenser unit. Clear at least two feet of space around the unit and gently rinse the fins with a garden hose to remove caked-on debris. Never use a pressure washer — it can bend the delicate fins.

Check Your Refrigerant Lines

The insulation on your refrigerant lines (the copper pipes running from your outdoor unit to your home) can degrade over time. Look for cracked, missing, or worn insulation and have it replaced if needed. Proper insulation keeps your system efficient.

Replace Your Filter — Again

If you replaced your filter at the start of heating season, it's likely due for a change now. A clean filter is the foundation of an efficient HVAC system, whether you're heating or cooling.

Test Your System Early

On the first warm day, switch to cooling mode and let it run for 15–20 minutes. Listen for unusual sounds, check that cool air is coming from all vents, and verify the thermostat is reading accurately. Catching problems now means you won't be sweating it out in July.
